Because puppies under the age of 20 weeks have a very unique period of learning. This is a crucial time for socialization in the very broadest of terms. What is “socialization”? Getting used to things everyday odd and normal things by being exposed to them.
Puppies from 8-20 weeks benefit hugely from a systematic barrage of positive new experiences every day to help ensure they develop into confident, happy adult dogs. The more a puppy is gently introduced to things they are reluctant to approach at first, the more they learn to adapt and accept new potentially “spooky” things the rest of their life.
Socialization to Other Dogs, People, Places & Things…and Training Too!
A strong focus of Puppy Wonder is to introduce your puppy to other known puppies and safe dogs of all ages. This helps puppies learn a wide variety of sociable behaviours. Sharon takes the utmost care in letting your puppy meet with friendly puppies and dogs with up-to-date vaccinations, and in safe areas. A tiny portion of this list includes getting them used to things they will encounter in life like patting, handling and movement (by people of all ages and looks), trips to the vet, vacuums, garden hoses, cats, garbage trucks, playgrounds, traffic, elevators, cats, pointy sticks, etc.
Sharon also spends some time training your puppy basic behaviours: go into their crate, nose targeting, settle on a mat, etc. These sessions are recorded and sent to you electronically within 24 hours. Training notes are also supplied.
Invest early in your puppy’s socialization and training, and you will enjoy the benefits for years to come!

How its done.
First we have a free, 30-minute telephone meeting to talk about the program. We explain the behaviours we teach and how to handle any issues you may be having. Every 3‐4 weeks we have another consultation (unless we see you at pick-up or drop off).
Sharon will come to your house in the morning and do some training at your house first. Next the socialization session begins as they go with Sharon to meet other dogs, people and new places. Your puppy is returned 3 hours later — happy & tired. (Mileage after 15 km one-way will be charged at $0.50/km) During this time your puppy will:
By the time they are brought home your puppy is happy and tired!
It’s Teamwork! Socializing and training your puppy needs commitment from you too! We need to be on the same page and be consistent with training methods to allow maximum benefit to you and your puppy. Puppy Wonder participants must either be enrolled in group training classes with Smart Paws or Mindful Behaviors (our training partner in Milton & Toronto), or you must take a Private Lesson with Sharon after 5 Puppy Wonder sessions / or once a month (to be pre-determined upon enrolment).
For puppies 10 weeks to approximately 5 months. Puppies older than 5 months can switch to Day Training and/or Fantastic Field Trips.
The first 2 weeks your puppy must come for 2 or 3 days/week. After that, once a week is the minimum. (Sharon will offer suggestions based on observed puppy behaviours.)
Cost: $90 + HST per session; Private Lesson is $90 + HST/hour
At Smart Paws, we use positive reinforcement training techniques to teach you and your dog the skills needed for a happy, co-operative life together.
